Seventy is a very young age to no longer be covered for Travel Insurance by Philip Suter - August 2014

August 2014: I was talking to someone I know about travelling and he told me that he no longer had travel insurance included with his bank package at HSBC. "They state on their web site under "Premier account travel insurance - When you reach 70, you will no longer be covered by HSBC Premier Travel Insurance."

I was somewhat surprised after received a notification from Lloyds Bank last month. They said " Worldwide Travel Insurance - Cover ceases fully on your 80th birthday. As long as you are under 80 your spouse, civil partner or partner will also be covered until they reach 80.".

We are now in an era whereby the UK national retirement age is currently 65 and could go up to 70 and when you retire people like to travel.

On the jml Insurance sites there are several companies advertising who offer travel products so taking a look at their websites have found the following information.(as at 5-8-14).

Endsleigh Insurance - They say "Our multiple trip insurance policy covers travellers up to the age of 74 for European trips, or up to the age of 60 for Worldwide cover" Find out more Here

Questor Travel Insurance - They say "Annual multi trip cover is not available to anyone aged 65 or over on the date of purchasing this insurance policy. If You reach the age of 65 during the Period of Insurance, cover will continue until the next renewal date but not thereafter.

Single trip cover is not available to anyone aged 75 or over on the date of purchasing this insurance policy (anyone aged 66 or over on the date of purchasing this insurance policy if travelling within the USA, Canada or the Caribbean). Find out more Here

Worldwideinsure Travel Insurance - Annual Travel Insurance - They say " Cover available for travellers up to 74yrs" then go onto say "Don't let buying travel insurance be the sticking point...

Restrictive policies used to mean that it became harder to buy insurance as It is essential to check policy age limits and to purchase insurance which covers any pre-existing medical conditions. Most of our policies cover travellers up to 74yrs, but we have policies available with no age restrictions at all. We can cover many pre-existing medical conditions, including long-term stable conditions and ones which have been only recently diagnosed and treated. if you call our office, we can quickly go through your medical details and will provide the best quote from a selection of policies" Find out more Here

Staysure Travel Insurance - Single Trip Travel - They say "We can now cover up to 104 days on a single trip for any age" Then under key facts "You must be 85 or under for single and annual multi-trip policies, 75 and under for long stay policies at the time you purchase insurance cover." Find out more Here

Annualtravelinsurance.com - They say "You and any person travelling will not be covered over the following ages: Economy Cover - Under 60 years. - Super and Super Plus Cover -79 years (Single Trip cover) or 75 years (Annual Multi Trip cover) - Backpacker - Up to 49 years. - Winter sports optional cover - Economy Cover - up to 59 years or Super and Super Plus Cover up to 65 years. People are now living much longer, they work longer and many will be retiring later. Insurance companies must take this on board more and design different packages if necessary for the "senior traveller". After all these people are just as likely to have flight delays and cancellations, baggage lost or a passport stolen as much younger travellers.

Many of these insurance companies are now trying to cover older travellers, but others need to look at the growing market of older people taking more holidays and wanting to enjoy them knowing that they have suitable travel insurance. It is an issue that won't go away and a market that currently has money.
